Besides my weekly podcast, I write periodic articles for Sports Radio Service. Below is the listing of articles from the past few months. I will post new links on here as the articles are published once or twice a week.
A’s 2025 Reprise of 2024
AUG 31 / Beginning September 1, the last month of the regular season, the A’s have 24 games left, currently with a 63-75 record. The 2025 version appears to have a much more explosive lineup than the 2024 version; with much less talented pitching, nevertheless, they are very close to ending with the same record, albeit with a very similar one, and have an outside (and although unlikely) shot at ending exactly as they did last season, which was a 69-93 record. Like the legendary Yankee broadcaster Mel Allen would say, “How about that!”
Oakland An Expansion City?
AUG 29 / Major League Baseball plans to expand to 32 teams after the Oakland Athletics move to Las Vegas and the Tampa Bay Rays secure a new ballpark. So that is not happening tomorrow; it will be a few more years. But could Oakland, California, be one of these expansion teams?
Giants Looking For The Next Barry Bonds?
AUG 21 / Over the last few years, the San Francisco Giants have attempted to sign some of the game’s biggest superstars, players who will truly bring fans to Oracle Park and, most importantly, lead the team to another World Series. No disrespect to Dominican-born Rafael Devers, who was acquired in a midseason trade from the Boston Red Sox; he is a very good player, but he is not in the same category as the ones you will see listed below.
A's Best of the Last Place Teams
AUG 19 / The objective is to win, but there can only be one champion. When all is settled, only one of 30 will get the trophy. In the Big Leagues, unlike Little Leagues, there is no “participation” award, and the closest thing to that is the Wild Card, which has been in place since 1995.
That’s Bananas! No Attendance Problem for These Guys!
AUG 17 / Unlike the Athletics, Rays, and Marlins, or any of the other 27 Major League teams, the Savanah Bananas can draw between 50,000 and 80,000 fans at any given time. They are not in Major League Baseball, but these bananas are ripe and ready for entertainment every game, pleasing thousands of people and lots of families who enjoy their antics.
Why is the A’s Owner Hated?
AUG 14 / We have all heard this phrase: “The customer is always right”, emphasizing the importance of customer satisfaction and prioritizing their needs. Many fans believe that A’s owner John Fisher has unfairly blamed the fans for the team’s struggles, thereby fostering considerable animosity. Baseball is a business; the A’s product is baseball, and the fans who attend the games and purchase their merchandise are the customers.
The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame – Induction of Bobby Avila
AUG 10 / On August 15, 2025, Bobby Avila will be inducted into The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians. Family members, museum representatives, and the Cleveland Guardians will be in attendance for the ceremony.
Odds to Win the World Series
AUG 6 / Players can get into big trouble if they bet on baseball games, particularly active players. Tucupita Marcano (one of my old-time favorite baseball names), a former infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was banned from attending Major League Baseball games, including those with the Pirates while he was on their roster.
Ichiro elected to Cooperstown, Not Unanimous?
JUL 29 / In 2001, when Ichiro Suzuki made his debut in Major League Baseball, I was broadcasting all home games for the Mariners in Seattle and then returning to the Bay Area to do the same for the San Francisco Giants, both in Spanish.
Baseball is Unique
JUL 27 / Baseball is a Sport of failure. You get one hit in three at-bats, and you are a very good hitter, hitting .333, an average that is worthy of a batting title most of the time, even though you failed twice in three tries. But sometimes you can hit the big jackpot in one game, and the whole world will know your name, especially nowadays with social media constantly on our minds every single second of the day. Here are some examples.
How does the A’s Controversy compare to others in Baseball?
JUL 25 / There is no doubt that the 1919 Black Sox Scandal which involved eight Chicago White Sox players who were accused of intentionally losing the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money from gamblers is the biggest scandal in the game, primarily due to the players’ betrayal of the game and its fans.
Trans Athletes officially Banned for the 2028 Olympics
JUL 23 / According to a Gallup poll conducted in May 2025, 69% of US adults believe that transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that align with the sex they were assigned at birth . This indicates a majority of Americans support restricting the participation of transgender athletes in sports based on their birth-assigned sex.
A’s Luis Severino Could Be Traded
JUL 11 / As Luis Severino was signed to a three year deal worth $67 million, the largest in A’s history. Severino is the most outspoken player on the A’s roster this season, primarily complaining about pitching in a minor league park, among other things.
MLB Robots are here for the All-Star Game!
JUL 11 / This next Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Atlanta will feature, for the first time, the use of its robot technology for ball-strike challenges. This represents a significant step toward utilizing this technology for the 2026 season and will eventually replace all human umpires in the not-too-distant future.
Welcome to A’s Baseball! Your Seats are Waiting
JUL 7 / For the first time in their history, the Sacramento A’s hosted the San Francisco Giants at Sacramento for a three-game series on July 4, 5, 6. The Giants won two of the three games, previously on May 16 and 18, and 19, while in San Francisco, the A’s were beaten again by the Giants who won two out of three at Sutter Health Park this past weekend.
Ex MLB Pitcher Chan Ho Park investing in the Athletics
JUL 4 / Former Major League Baseball pitcher Chan Ho Park and Suga (Min Yoon-gi), a member of the famous K-Pop group BTS, are investing in a private equity fund led by Park’s firm, Team61. The investors are joining a group of investors backing the Athletics at a $2 billion evaluation in their bid to relocate to Las Vegas, according to multiple reports.
Big Victory for Women’s Sports
JUL 2 / The University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday modified a trio of school records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. It announced that it would apologize to female athletes “disadvantaged” by her participation on the women’s swimming team, as part of a resolution to a federal civil rights case.
